- The Final List (tm)
- USERS AND DEVELOPERS' MANUAL
- Revision #1, 6/17/89
- (c)June1989, Chet Solace
- CvS Enterprises
- ALL RIGHTS RESERVED!
-
- ==========================================================================
- A. RATING AND DESCRIPTION CODES/LEGENDS: (Located in Bbs-Name field)
-
- Format: bbsname [software] [storage:multiply by 10] [\] [Msg board rating]
- [\] [File section rating] [private-bbs code] [\] [Pay-bbs code]
- [Pc-Pursuit code (+)] [Starlink code (*)] State (Abbreviation)
- Notes:
- =====
- 1) FORWARD slash ("/") is used only to separate items in 'comments' field
- 2) REVERSE slash ("\") is used in 'Bbs name' area to either denote
- the position of missing information, or as a separator (near the
- 'state' area) between pay/private board info and other data.
-
- Explanation of Rating Criteria: (SYSOPS! READ THIS!)
- ====================================================
- Due to some confusion about how I actually rate boards, let me clear
- up some of the more common misunderstandings:
-
- FIRST: Some sysops are confusing the DATE with the REASON codes;
- leading to some rather sharply worded Email messages being left to me
- on AMIC... If sysops READ this user manual, the problem can be avoided.
-
- SECOND: If a board is listed as "NR", and there is a date but NO
- reason code; it is there to remind me to rate the board on my next call.
-
- THIRD: When I rate a board, I rate ONLY the AMIGA message and file
- areas! It would more than TRIPLE my expense if I tried to do otherwise,
- and the resultant rating would be meaningless to amiga users..
-
- FOURTH: To Sysops that complain that their ratings aren't good enough;
- all I can say is that I rate what I SEE at the time I call. If I was
- deleted from the userlog since my last call, then the rating received will
- be based only on what I can actually SEE. I try to call each board at
- least twice a year, and it is NOT fair for sysops to DEMAND that I spend
- MY Service-Connected Disability Pension to make multiple calls to re-rate
- their bbs's, when NONE of the complaining sysops have yet donated ANYTHING
- towards the expense of maintaining this list! If they do not have the
- common courtesy not to routinely delete me from the userlog, and they
- do not allow 'new' callers to AT LEAST SEE the file catalogs, and READ
- messages and bulletins; then they have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to complain
- about the ratings they get on my next call. WHAT I *SEE* IS WHAT THEY GET!
- Boards that routinely purge long distance callers will no longer be rated,
- and will be noted as UNDESIRABLE for long-distance use!
-
- FIFTH: As of June 1st, due to the number of sysops that routinely purge
- me from their userlogs, the following policy is effective regarding the
- RATING of ALL amiga-supporting bbs's:
-
- IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR RATING OF THEIR FILE AND MESSAGE AREAS, IT IS NOW
- MANDATORY THAT MY ACCOUNT ON A BBS BE LEFT ACTIVE. BBS'S THAT INSIST ON
- FORCING ME TO RE-REGISTER AT EACH CALL NO LONGER MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIRE-
- MENTS FOR RATING ON THE FINAL LIST(TM), AND ANY PREVIOUS RATINGS WILL BE
- DELETED, AND THE BOARD SIMPLY LISTED AS "NOT RATED" UNDER REASON CODE 1.
- IF THE BOARD HAS CRASHED, OR THERE ARE LEGITIMATE REASONS WHY I MUST
- RE-APPLY, IT IS THE SYSOP'S RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY ME !
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Ratings: Scale= 1 thru 0 (Zero=10; the highest possible rating)
- ======= Relative "grading standard" for Amiga Msg/File areas.
-
- Code: Description: (Located in the 'bbs name' area)
- ==== ===========
- 1 = Bbs is either new or dying.
- 2 = Little user support
- 3 = Much slower than average
- 4 = Slower than average
- 5 = Average Activity
- 6 = Better than average
- 7 = Much better than average
- 8 = Very good
- 9 = Excellent!
- 0 = THE BEST!
-
- $ = PAY System: FEE required (may be one-time, monthly, hourly, etc)
- P = Private System: restricted access
-
- Other Information: (Located between phone# and Baud rate)
- =================
- PvT = Pay or otherwise closed to public.
- Leave this in your phone dir! If you attempt to dial a "PriV"
- board, your modem returns an "Error" code . saving you the cost of
- connecting with a board that won't allow you access anyway. If you
- decide to join later, replacing "PriV" with spaces enables dialing.
- PrB = Bbs on probation; subject to confirmation of continued Ami support.
- FaX = Bbs is offline, replaced by Fax machine; delete if no bbs by 60 days.
- DWN = Bbs is offline, and will be deleted within 60 days if no answer
- DED = Bbs permanently down; delete within 60 days
- DIS = Number is disconnected; delete immediately
- VOI = Voice; Human being, no bbs online; delete after 60 days
- HLD = Confirmed bbs, temporarily offline, do not delete/hold 60-90 days
- BSY = Busy, can't confirm
- N/A = No Answer, try later

- Reason Codes for Unrated Boards:
- ===============================
-
- --- = Call at your own risk: [Location: between phone# and baud rate]
- rated NOT-Desirable for long-distance use, or totally empty.
- (Does NOT interfere with dialing number. See 'Reason Codes', below)
-
- NR = Not-Rated (see below) (This is located in the 'comments' area)
-
- Format: NR(date)-("Rsn" [reason code] [Empty] [NEW] [Too Slow])
-
- Reason Codes:
- ============
- 1. Long distance callers are purged at less than 90-day intervals;
-
- 2. Some Qbbs or Tbbs boards where there is no global 'deselect'
- command for message areas; or your choices are not SAVED as
- a permanent part of your user-record; forcing you to individually
- deactivate unwanted message areas every time you call!
-
- 3. Boards with long, inane questionnaires, and/or very slow response,
- and/or little to offer for the trouble. Inconsiderate of L.D. users.
- Many purge L.D. callers routinely, forcing re-reg. at each call;
-
- 4. Bbs's that discriminate against, or permanently ban callers
- based upon their race, religion, sex, or physical location.
-
- 5. Out of state/country bbs's that insist on calling users collect
- in order to verify them. These are flagged merely to warn
- prospective callers in advance, and do NOT otherwise reflect in
- any way on the quality of the bbs!
-
- 6. Sysops that are excessively abusive or inconsiderate of users.
-
- 7. Boards requiring multiple phone calls to do anything; sometimes
- even to find out if the bbs supports the user's machine!
-
- 8. STORE-run bbs's that additionally charge users for access.
-
- 9. Bbs's ('Image bbs' is notorious) using control characters
- in the menus that force Amiga into the alternate character set,
- rendering the display unreadable after every few lines displayed.
-
- 10. Mail-order bbs's that have prompted excessive user complaints
- for alleged unethical or questionable business practices.
-
- 99. No english menus available; cannot be accurately rated.
-
-
- 9600Baud and higher Modem Identification:
- ========================================
-
- HST = USRobotics HSTv32 = USRobotics V32 HST-DS = USR-Dual Standard
- Hay = Hayes Tbz or PeP = Trailblazer MaX = Microcom 9600/Ax
-
- ==========================================================================
-
- B. CHANGING BAUD RATES TO MATCH *YOUR* MAXIMUM BAUD RATE:
- (Your text editor MUST have a Global Search/Replace function)
-
- 1) Load TFL(tm) into your text editor...I suggest using TxEd if you
- have it; otherwise Cygnus, AZ, Med, Aedit, QED, etc should work fine.
-
- 2) Enter any listed baud rate higher than your modem can handle in
- the "Search" string as follows: (one space)(baud rate)(one space)
- Note: when searching for baud rates of 14400, 19200 or 38400, do
- NOT add the space at the end, or it will mung up your resultant file.
-
- 3) Enter YOUR highest available baud rate in the 'replace' string, as
- follows: (one space)(your highest baud rate)(one space)
- Note: NO editing is necessary if your modem supports 19200 baud.
-
- 4) Activate the GLOBAL search/replace.. The entire operation will have
- to be repeated for EACH baud rate higher than your modem can handle.
-
- 5) Current baud rates listed in TFL:
-
- 300 1200 2400 9600 19200
-
- Some newer modems can also handle 14400 and 38400 baud, but are
- listed as either 9600 or 19200 due to lack of sufficient compatible
- modems to justify listing them separately. Also, 4800 and 17400
- max-baud categories have been dropped, as no listed bbs's use them.
- =========================================================================
-
- C. USING A TEXT EDITOR TO SEARCH FOR SPECIFIC BBS PARAMETERS:
- (TXed, Cygnus, AZ, QED, Med, etc; with global "search/replace" function)
-
- Any text editor with a global SEARCH and REPLACE option can be used
- to locate almost ANY specific type or location of any bbs in the WORLD.
-
- The various bbs codes are CASE SENSITIVE, so your text editor should
- be able to distinguish between upper/lower case! (I suggest TXed, by
- MicroSmiths... it's small enough to allow the entire Final List(tm)
- to be edited on a 512k machine.. but do NOT multitask!
-
- 1. WHAT YOU CAN SEARCH FOR:
-
- a) BBS Software type: (use the abbreviations furnished in TFL);
-
- b) High rated boards: Pick a rating level below which you DON'T want
- to search, then simply enter the desired rating in the 'search'
- string.. i.e. 'M6', 'M7', 'M8', 'M9' or 'M0' for above average
- message bases, or 'F6', 'F7', 'F8', 'F9' or 'F0' for above-average
- file sections. Don't forget that '0' now stands for TEN, and is
- the HIGHEST possible rating, NOT the lowest! :->.. You'll have
- to repeat the search sequence for each desired rating value;
-
- c) STATE: Enter the 2-letter state abbreviation (in capitals)
- followed by a period. A 'search' will take you directly to the
- TOP of that state/country's listings;
-
- d) AREA CODE: enter the desired area code into the search gadget,
- followed by a dash "-" (the dash is MANDATORY!);
-
- e) PC-Pursuitable boards: enter "+" as the search pattern;
-
- f) Starlink-able boards: enter "*" as the search pattern;
-
- g) NEW bbs's to this edition: enter "" (alt-n) as the search pattern
-
- h) BBS's CHANGED since last edition: enter "©" (alt-e) as the
- search pattern;
-
- i) PAY-BBS's: enter "$" as the search pattern;
-
- j) Private boards: enter "(space)PriV(space)" as the search pattern;
-
- k) Fidonet Boards: there are two ways to do this; if you KNOW the node
- number, enter it as "@nnn/nnn" (number of digits may vary); or
- enter "Fi@" to search through ALL the fidonet boards;
-
- l) Citadel Net boards: enter "Ci@" to search through all the
- networking citadel bbs's;
-
- m) ExpressNet: enter "Xs@";
-
- n) GT-powercomm Network: enter "Gt@";
-
- o) Fnet: "Fr@";
-
- p) PunterNet: enter "Pu@";
-
- q) WWIVnet: enter "Ww@";
-
- r) Unix/Usenet: enter "UU@";
-
- s) Phoenix-Net: enter "Px@";
-
- t) Bbs's (all networks) supporting Echomail: enter "Echo";
-
- u) Boards that I PERSONALLY post the newest release of TFL to;
- enter "TFL" as the search string. These boards are usually
- the BEST in their states/regions!
-
- v) Just about anything you can imagine, you can locate INSTANTLY
- using this method... for instance.. to find Starlink-able
- boards in Arizona that are also NEW, enter: "*AZ"
-
- 2. WHAT NOT TO SEARCH FOR:
- a) Searching for specific BBS NAME is NOT recommended, as many are
- abbreviated to save space, & there are a lot of duplicate names :-)
-
- b) Don't search for ANYTHING, until you go to the top of TFL, then
- search forward for the string: "TOP." this bypasses the text
- header, which might otherwise result in false positive matches.
- =============================================================================
-
- D. CONVERSION OF TFL FOR USE WITH EXISTING PROGRAMS:
- NOTE: If you are a paid member of AMIC PBN (The BBS); you can
- download pre-edited Final List(tm) phone directories for ALL amiga
- terminal programs, including JRcomm*, Handshake*, BaudBandit (Commercial
- release), Online!*, Dr. Term Pro*, AMIC, ACCESS!, Comm (all versions),
- AVCterm, AZcomm, InTouchv3.0+, GT (all versions) & BaudBandit (All ver.)
- (* by the program name indicates phone directories available soon)
-
- AMIC membership is only $39.95 per year, for unlimited time and NO
- download ratios.. AMIC has 8 lines at up to 19200 baud. Shorter
- memberships ARE available.
-
- Program Name: #of entries per 'phonebook' Special Requirements:
- ============ ============================ ============================
- ACCESS! 60 per file/unlimited #files None
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- AMIC! limited only by available None: The entire 218k
- memory/Unlimited # of files. TFL, including comments,
- can be loaded; provided you
- have sufficient ram.(3 meg)
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- GT1.1,1.2 400 per file/Unlimited #files None (Also see note 2)
-
- BaudBandit(Demo Version) " " " "
-
- BaudBandit(Release version) " " " "
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ATalk III 60 entries max. in ONE file None
- (no provision for additional
- phone directories)
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Comm1.32-1.34 44 per file/Unlimited #files None
-
- AZcomm " "
-
- In Touch V3.0 " "
-
- AVCterm " "
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- *Note 1:
- Most of the bbs rating information has been moved from the 'comments'
- area into the 'bbs name' field. If you wish to use scripts with those
- programs that use part or all of the comments field for script commands,
- just replace the existing comments with your script files.. No sweat.
- (Applies to ACCESS!, GT1.1/1.2/BaudBandit, and AMIC)
-
- *Note 2:
- With the GT/BaudBandit(Demo) series, you can ignore many of the
- parameters shown in the docs provided with the program (ie: CCF8N1, etc)..
- I suggest you simply use 400-entry chunks of TFL as-is.

- (See abbreviation tables in
- TFL User Manual)
-
- Status Code 18 (one character) (new addition to this release)
- © (changed from prior release)
- (Note: this position was formerly
- a blank filler. The special
- characters here will NOT affect
- the dialing sequence in any of
- the terminal programs tested)
-
- Filler 19 (one blank char.) Had to add this, as BaudBandit
- Commercial release will not dial
- will not dial otherwise.(academic
- since the upload file transfers
- don't work correctly anyway..)
- Took one character away from
- the phone number to compensate.
-
- Phone Number 20 (up to 16 char) First 3 digits will ALWAYS be
- the area code for U.S/Canadian
- entries, and will ALWAYS be the
- U.S. international outdial code
- (011) for overseas entries.
- Phone number field may contain
- embedded spaces and/or '-'..
- Alpha entries such as 'PriV', etc
- are MEANT to cause an error
- condition if dialing is attempted;
- as these are NOT public bbs's,
- and users are urged to LEAVE these
- codes alone unless they decide
- to subscribe to a particular bbs.
-
- Filler 36 (blank, 1 char.) Not used..YET..leave it alone!
- may add code here for type of
- high-speed modem used.
-
- Baud rate 37 (5 char/numeric) MAXIMUM Baud rate of bbs
-
- Filler 42 (blank, 1 char.) Do not use.. might be improperly
- interpreted as a control code by
- the GT/BaudBandit programs
-
- Duplex 43 (1 char, alpha) F=full, H=Half (Default=F)
-
- Data Bits 44 (1 char/numeric) 7=7bits 8=8bits (Default=8)

- (Default = 1)
-
- Filler 47 (1 char/blank) Reserved for future use
-
- Comments/Scripts 48 (length varies) Max. length depends on term. prog,
- I use 25 chars average, or up
- to 30 chars. maximum, although
- some term progs may truncate the
- last few characters, and AMIC
- will expand each entry to 256
- bytes automatically. The Comment
- field may also be used for script
- commands in ACCESS, BaudBandit,
- (all versions) and GT (all ver.)
-
- FLOATING-POSITION FIELDS:
- =========================
-
- BBS DATA (positions 1 through 15)
- The first 15 characters of each bbs entry ('bbs data') hold a LOT
- of information, from the name of the bbs (often abbreviated), type of
- software used, available hard-disk storage, codes for pay and private
- systems, more codes for PC-pursuitable and Starlink-able numbers, and
- ratings of the bbs's message and file areas. The format below shows the
- order in which this info will occur, if present.. Missing info is
- indicated by presence of a back-slash (\).
-
- Format: bbsname [software] [storage:multiply by 10] [\] [Msg board rating]

-
- TERMINAL PROGRAM DEVELOPERS SECTION
- ***********************************
-
- A. THE PROBLEM:
- ============
-
- Due to the increased size of The Final List(tm), it is no longer
- practical for end-users to split TFL into phone directories for their
- favorite terminal programs.. At 215,000 bytes, I can BARELY load the
- thing into my little 512k machine to edit it a line at a time!
-
- Although this is a major rewrite of TFL, the format/position of all
- program-critical fields has been 'locked', so communication software
- programmers need not worry about any future changes to TFL affecting their
- terminal programs. The real problem is in getting programmers to either USE
- the existing standardized phonebook format, so that users can load TFL
- without having to manually enter each number into new terminal programs;
- or provide conversion utilities that will take TFL as input, and create
- usable phone directories from it for the particular program. Jack Radigan
- has already agreed to write such a utility for JRcomm, and TFL entries
- can currently be used 'as-is' in the following Term. programs:
-
-
- NOTE: There is NOW a conversion utility to create phonebooks for Online!
- and Online! Platinum Series.. Look for "TFLONL.arc" on your nearest bbs!
-
-
- 1) GT1.1, GT1.2, & BaudBandit (Demo & Release versions)
- 2) Comm 1.32 - 1.34
- 3) AVCterm
- 4) AZcomm
- 5) Access! (all versions through 2.42)
- 6) In-Touch V3.0
- 7) ATalk III (All versions)
- 8) AMIC-TERM (All versions through 1.0)

- B. THE IDEAL CONVERSION UTILITY WOULD BE...
- ========================================
-
- One that reads and displays TFL, allows the user to highlight
- bbs's he wants to use in phone directories, and select the terminal program
- output format desired (see above).... User should also be able to simply
- select 'ALL NEW' bbs's, or 'ALL CHANGED' bbs's (see the codes above)
-
- User should be able to select how he wants the entries processed;
- i.e: sorted by bbsname, or state, or baud rate, or area code, etc (all of
- these are fixed-position except for bbsname; for which the 1st 12 characters
- of each record can be used.
-
- Due to the size of TFL, it's not really practical to write in a
- sort-all option, unless the user has at least a meg or two of ram..
-
- After the user has selected all the bbs's or selection parameters
- and chosen an output file format, the program might be set up to write a
- single file to disk of selected numbers, then read it back in for sorting
- and chopping into correctly sized/formatted phonebooks... this would reduce
- the ram requirement to the actual total size of the desired bbsfile, instead
- of requiring the 200+k ram for TFL, plus the additional overhead of sorting
- and processing the selected entries..
-
- That is the IDEAL solution... now whether anyone wants to tackle that
- large a project, or just do a conversion utility for a specific terminal
- program; I hope a few programmers step forward to assist me with this..
-

-
- C. FINAL REMARKS/CONCLUSIONS:
-
- NO further changes will be made to the TFL format to ensure forward-
- compatibility with upgraded versions of any program, so it is the sole
- responsibility of the software programmers to see that their 'phone-
- directory' format remains TFL-Compatible! The Data Record Layout will
- provide programmers with ample information to ensure compatability.
-
- Software companies that refuse to adapt the standard format or
- provide conversion utilities for purchasers of their terminal programs
- are going to be left marketing programs whose value to end-users diminishes
- in direct proportion to the growth in number of Amiga-supporting bbs's.
